The first specialised classroom for the nuclear and uranium industry has opened at the Kazakh-British Technical University (KBTU). The project was initiated by NAC Kazatomprom JSC for students of the Uranium Engineering (Uran Isi) educational programme.
An MDR-1200MK drilling rig has been installed and commissioned at the university's training ground. It was handed over to KBTU on behalf of Volkovgeology JSC, with the support of Kazatomprom, to mark the university's 25th anniversary, and will be used for the hands-on training of future uranium industry professionals.
The ceremony was attended by Meirzhan Yussupov, Chairman of the Management Board of NAC Kazatomprom JSC, KBTU Rector Maratbek Gabdullin, Maksat Zhylkaidarov, Chairman of the Management Board of Volkovgeology JSC, and first-year students of the programme.
The Uranium Engineering programme was launched in 2025 and developed by KBTU faculty together with Kazatomprom specialists. More than 40 students enrolled last year, and 70 first-year students were admitted this year, reflecting the growing interest of young people in nuclear energy and the uranium industry.
Kazakhstan has been the world's leading uranium producer since 2009, and the industry needs a new generation of qualified specialists to keep developing. Training young professionals remains one of the priorities of the Kazatomprom group, of which Volkovgeology JSC is a member.
